One of my favorite verses is, "[…] forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing." I try to think of this verse whenever I witness or experience hate crimes, racism, malicious acts, hostility, and just plain not-good (or kind)-behavior from other human beings.
Ignorance, pain, unforgiveness, jealousy, loneliness, bitterness, regret, and self-hatred are some of the common reasons people do nasty things to one another.
The next time you witness someone hurting somebody or experience someone hurting you, remember this verse. Though it may seem people are conscious of their actions, they are usually unenlightened; they are encapsulated in a fog of ignorance and have not dealt with their pasts and unproductive and destructive emotions and thoughts within themselves.
Reminder #1 - It’s not personal even when it is personal.
Reminder #2 - Forgive them, for they do not know what they do.
