Money is a renewable resource. You can always create more of it. You can be the master of money and make it work for you.
Most people choose to allow money to be the master of their time and their lives, though. People chase money all their lives and still go to the grave without stocking away much of it.
Why do so many people spend most of their lives chasing and acquiring money while only amassing a little of it? Part of the reason is a person’s philosophy around money.
There are four questions in this article I want us to explore:
Do you spend more or equal to your earnings?
Do you spend a large part of your time chasing money?
Do you value a materialistic over a minimalistic lifestyle?
Do you ever feel like you have enough financial resources?
Let’s break down each question.
1. Do you spend more or equal to your earnings?
If you spend more or equal to your earnings, you can earn as much money as you’d like, but you’ll never acquire wealth, let alone have your money work for you. Because there will never be any money to work for you.
How can you get your money to work for you?
You will never build wealth if you never have wealth to work with.
Spending less than you earn is the foundation of building wealth. Until you master this habit, you will stay in your current position, or it will get worse (due to inflation).
2. Do you spend a large part of your time chasing money?
It’s common to spend most days working and trying to earn a living. The problem with this is that you end up not living. You end up missing the whole point of life.
What are you chasing money for?
What is it that people desire that they think money can offer them?
More often than not, what people think money can provide, they can find a way to produce for themselves now.
A perfect example is freedom. Most people desire freedom and believe money can offer it to them.
But what is freedom? What do you want to be free of?
Do you want to be able to buy more things?
Do you want to be able to live in a big house and drive nice luxury cars?
Do you want to not deal with your boss anymore or have to work?
Cause that’s not freedom. Freedom is a concept; it’s something you can create for yourself now. If you don’t want to work a specific job, don’t. If you don’t want to live in a particular area, don’t. If you don’t want to work on projects you hate, don’t. If you don’t want to work for your boss, don’t. You don’t need money to make any of these choices. You only need your mind and a plan of action to execute it.
There are people with less that have more freedom than those with more.
Chasing money, superficial goals, materialistic things, and luxury is a total waste of your life. But creating more time by focusing only on activities you love, eliminating work and obligations (e.g., debt) from your life that subtract time — this creates freedom.
How can you get your money to work for you?
Stop chasing it and invest it. Allow your money to work on your behalf and compound exponentially. Don’t chase superficial or materialistic goals. Don’t chase money. Create it.
3. Do you value a materialistic over a minimalistic lifestyle?
Most people are materialistic in some form — even if the materials they acquire aren’t luxury items. People like collecting sh*t, which is why most people have a ton of stuff in their residences, cars, and offices that they don’t need or use.
How can you get your money to work for you?
Adopt a more minimal lifestyle. The less you buy, the more money you keep. Do you really need everything you own? Probably not.
4. Do you ever feel like you have enough financial resources?
You attract or repel wealth into your life. People might think this statement is ludicrous, but I’m a perfect example that it’s true.
For a lot of my life, I was technically poor and earned less than the poverty level, but I always maintained a wealthy mentality. I felt wealthy. I never felt broke. Sometimes, I felt stretched, but I never used statements such as:
I’m broke.
I’m strapped.
I’m struggling.
I can’t do that.
I’m just waiting on that next paycheck.
And I also rarely felt financial stress — even when I had every right to feel it.
My thoughts shaped my actions, which created habits, which produced results that created my healthy financial foundation.
If you believe you don’t have enough, that is the predicament you will continue creating for yourself. If you continually chase money, you will never have enough of it, which perpetuates a lack of mentality.
How can you get your money to work for you?
Believe you have more than enough resources. Practice living below your means. Invest your money so it can work harder on your behalf.
