~ This poem is for my mother. D.S. Harris

My mama taught me well
She taught me how to fold clothes
She taught me how to let go
-
She taught me how to speak
She taught how to be assertive and not meek
-
She taught me to invest in self-care
She taught me how to do my own hair
-
She taught me how to grow
She taught me when to learn and when to know
-
She taught me how to heal
She taught me how to be still
-
She taught me to follow my passions
She taught me to never sit and do nothing
-
She showed me the beauty of books
She showed me how to cook
-
She always stressed how essential it is to read
Looking back, without books, I wouldn’t be me
-
She taught me how to network
She taught me to be independent and to work
-
She taught how to have firm boundaries
She showed me what it looks like to be genuinely happy
-
She taught me when it’s time to go
She taught me to stay when everything is gold
-
She showed me what it looks like to survive
But she also showed me what it looks like to thrive
-
She went through incredible pain
But somehow she made it out, sane
-
She taught me how to mend my wounds
When I’m alone, or feeling blue
-
She taught me how to use my pain
To learn from it, and turn it into something gained
-
She enabled me to learn everything I know
She taught me what it means to truly be me
-
Through the years, she taught me the importance of facing fear
I wouldn’t be me, without her
I wouldn’t be where I am, without her
-
Thank you, mom
