If you happen to be a shopper/spender or collector, you might have money sitting all around you without even realizing it.
Recently, I conducted a move and ended up needing to make several purchases, or so I thought.
What ended up happening was that I bought more than necessary.
After all the dust settled, I could capture what I needed and didn't.
There was such a contrast between what I needed and didn't need that I now have even less stuff than before I moved.
The thing about moving is you can find yourself in a swarm and start placing urgency on anything and everything. Before you realize it, you're spending more than necessary on things you don't necessarily need.
I've been doing a few things for the last few weeks:
Donating
Trashing
Returning
Donating can earn you money in the future if you pursue a donation tax receipt, but if you need hard cash now, returning items that you no longer need or will no longer use is your next move.
RETURNING things is an easy way to find money.
Some Things Are Only Needed Once or Only ONE Set
Ladders: Do you really use a ladder every day?
Carpet Cleaners: How often do you really clean your carpet?
Batteries: Do you really need 5–10 packs of batteries? Maybe they'll hold you off for a little while at the beginning of an apocalypse, but you probably don't need that many in your daily life.
Storage: Check your storage, garage, and other junk areas. How often do you use that stuff? See if you can return anything to put more money back in your pocket.
Cleaning Supplies: You don't need more than a few cleaning products; I use one.
Towels: Towels are washable. You don't need several sets.
Pillows: How many pillows does it take for you to get comfortable? :)
Some Things Don't Work Out
Plants: If you get new plants that don't work out or die immediately, return them.
Bedding: I ordered some bedding that showed dog hair a bit too conspicuously. That would have been annoying. I returned it.
Decor: If you don't love or want to use that new furniture like you initially thought before buying, return it.
Humidifiers: You thought you were up to keep refilling the humidifier but find it a pain in the ass. Return it.
Never try to make a purchase work.
If you can't return it, sell it, or do this…
Let’s say you need or want to bring in extra cash, but you’ve passed your return window. Sell your items.
There are so many apps and marketplaces available to sell your items.
The alternative is to ask for an exception. You’d be surprised how many customer service reps will grant an exception for a delayed return. It never hurts to ask; the worst someone can tell you is “no.”

I'm all in favor a minimalistic lifestyle. The only thing I'd absolutely not want to live without is my fabulous coffee machine. That $800 added comfort to my life.
