For some of us, asking for what we want hasn’t (or isn’t) always been a cakewalk. It can be excruciatingly uncomfortable and anxiety-driven when we finally muck up the courage to ask for what we want.
But why?
I believe it narrows down to the following items:
1. Self-Confidence
2. Self-Worth
3. Courage
If you lack any of these three characteristics, you will most likely struggle with asking for what you need and asking for what you want. Furthermore, you will often put the comfort of others before your needs — even if it is their job to put your comfort above their own. For example, some struggle with informing their waiter of their incorrect order, and instead settle. Some even feel uncomfortable asking for more condiments or something as simple as a straw).
Let me tell you why you must buck up and ask for what you want and need?
If you go through life not doing this, you will miss out on an enormous amount of opportunity and happiness.
You will always be that person who is well underpaid.
You will be the doormat.
You will not be treated with the respect you deserve.
You will become bitter from being treated “unfair.”
You will like yourself less.
You will live a stagnant life.
Most of your dreams will probably remain just dreams.
You will live an unfulfilled life.
The list goes on and on. So you decide today:
I will get be uncomfortable asking for what I want and need until it feels comfortable
I will not ask for what I want and need because I am uncomfortable
